Indoor shutters, internal shutters and inside window shutters describe the same broad category: shutters fitted on the room side of the glass. Plantation shutters have adjustable horizontal slats, called louvres. Solid shutters use opaque panels instead.
Start with what you want to screen. Then decide whether you need to tilt the louvres, open individual tiers or move the whole covering aside.
Cover the full window with continuous panels. Separate upper and lower louvre control can let in daylight above while screening the lower glass.
Explore plantation shutters →Cover the lower part of the window and leave the upper glass clear. Useful for street-facing rooms where privacy is mainly needed at eye level.
See café style shutters →Open the top and bottom doors independently. Choose these when you want to open the upper panels fully while keeping the lower tier closed.
Compare independent tiers →Traditional wooden panels create a panelled finish. Open the doors to let in daylight; there are no louvres to tilt.
View solid shutters →Bi-fold panels fold together; bi-pass panels slide behind one another. Track position and panel parking space matter on wide windows and glazed doors.
Plan shutters for wide openings →Made to follow an arch or another unusual outline. The shape and fixing space determine which sections can open and how you reach the glass.

Wooden interior shutters suit living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms where you want a painted or natural timber finish. Our Austin range uses paulownia hardwood, while Newport uses poplar. Compare samples against your walls, flooring and existing window joinery.
White wooden shutters give a consistent finish across different rooms. A stained Austin finish brings out the timber character, while a custom paint colour can make the shutters part of the room’s colour scheme. Available finishes and configurations depend on the range.
Louvre width, panel proportions and visible controls all affect the look. Wider louvres give a broader view between blades when open; smaller louvres create a finer pattern. We check the depth behind them so they can tilt freely.
The wooden shutters shown here use separate upper and lower louvre control within the same full-height doors. That gives different light settings without the extra doors of a tier-on-tier layout.

Choose for the moisture in the room
If you have been looking for vinyl interior shutters, PVC is the material to compare. Our Dulwich waterproof PVC range gives the appearance of painted shutters with a surface suited to bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms.
Faux wood describes a wood-like appearance rather than one universal specification. We also offer faux wood ranges, with the finish and suitability checked for your room. Do not assume every composite or faux wood shutter has the same moisture resistance.
Tell us if the window is next to a shower, bath or sink. We check the material, frame position and access around taps and shower screens, as well as privacy from neighbouring windows. Keep the room’s ventilation usable when planning the panels.

Daylight, privacy & sleep
In bedrooms, full-height or tier-on-tier shutters cover the whole opening. Tilt the louvres to change the light and sightlines, then open the panels when you want access to the glass. Check privacy with the lights on after dark as well as during the day.
Standard shutters are not complete blackout: small gaps remain around the louvres and moving parts. If morning light is a concern, ask about a compatible integrated blackout blind and the frame depth it needs.
For a living room or home office, think about glare on the television or desk and the view from your usual seat. Café shutters can screen the pavement while leaving the upper glass open; split tilt can provide separate light settings across a full-height panel.
Plan your bedroom shutters →
Each face of the bay needs its own measurements and opening plan. Matching rail heights helps the finished layout feel consistent, while corner posts and handles determine how the panels meet.
See our bay window shutter guide →French doors may need a shaped frame around the handles. Wide sliding or folding doors need enough room for a suitable track and parked panels, with a practical route through the opening.

These are guide ranges, not fixed quotations. The upper end includes an allowance for fitting variations. Other materials, custom finishes, hidden controls, shaped panels, tracks, repairs and difficult access can change the price. A whole-house quotation is based on the full order, rather than simply multiplying a one-window estimate.
Compare like-for-like quotes: material, coverage, frame, controls, delivery, installation and VAT. A cheap supply-only price leaves measuring and fitting to you. Tell us your budget so we can compare straightforward layouts and standard finishes.
Café shutters use less material, but still need measuring and fitting. Choose them because lower-window coverage suits the room, rather than expecting them to cost half as much.
Use approximate dimensions for an initial budget. We take the final measurements at your free home survey and provide a written quotation for the agreed specification.

A neat fit starts with more than width and height. We check the window recess, handles, sill, fixing surfaces and where each panel will open. Furniture and radiators can affect the layout just as much as the window itself.

Send your postcode, a photo of each opening and approximate dimensions. Include the surrounding wall and any handles, taps or furniture that may restrict movement.

At your free survey, compare materials, colours and louvres in the room’s own light. We measure the opening and agree how the panels and windows will operate.

Once your made-to-measure shutters are ready, our carpenters fit the frames, adjust the panels and show you how to operate and care for them.
As a guide, full-height shutters for a 1.2m × 1.2m straight window are £750–£825 using our standard painted Austin hardwood specification. This includes measuring, delivery, straightforward fitting and 20% VAT. Larger windows, different materials and more complex layouts need their own quote.
Made-to-measure shutters involve a frame, fitted panels and installation, so compare the complete job rather than a panel-only price. Size, material, finish and opening style affect the total. A straightforward layout and standard finish can help keep the specification within your budget.
They can be a good choice if you want adjustable privacy, a fitted finish and a covering you can use throughout the day. Consider how long you expect to stay, how often you open the windows and whether you need complete darkness. A blind may suit you better if the opening has very little room for shutter panels.
Interior shutter blinds is a common search term for plantation shutters. They are rigid framed panels with adjustable louvres. Unlike a Venetian blind, the shutter panels open on hinges or a suitable track rather than lifting into a stack above the glass.
White and other painted finishes are available across our collection, with colours depending on the range. Austin also offers stained timber finishes. For black shutters or a specific shade, ask about a suitable custom colour. An oak-like stain is a finish choice; our timber ranges are paulownia and poplar, not oak.
Often, yes. An inside-mount frame needs enough depth for the louvres to turn and clearance around handles and catches. If the recess is too shallow or obstructed, we assess another frame position. We confirm the arrangement at survey before the shutters are ordered.
Many can, but there is no single panel layout for every size. Small windows need a careful balance between the frame and usable louvre area. Wider openings may need more panels, supporting posts or a track. We check the limits of the chosen range against your measurements.
No. Wooden shutters can have adjustable louvres. Solid-panel shutters have opaque panelled sections without louvres, so you open the panels to admit daylight. Both styles are available within our hardwood collection, subject to the design and dimensions.
