Shutters for Bifold Doors

Shutters across bifold doors usually need their own planned opening system. The glazed doors and the shutter panels must each have enough room to move and stack.

Folding shutters or sliding panels?

Tracked bi-fold shutters fold into groups. Bi-pass shutters slide behind neighbouring panels. These are shutter mechanisms: they do not describe how the glazed doors behind them operate.

A folding layout can move panels towards the sides, while a sliding layout leaves some panels in front of the opening. The final clear opening depends on the track and stacking arrangement. For a narrower pair of doors, a French-door layout may be more appropriate, as illustrated here.

Allow space for panels, tracks and handles

We measure the width and height of the opening, the reveal depth and where the door leaves stack. We also check projecting handles, the floor finish and suitable fixing positions for the proposed track.

The specification confirms whether a lower track is needed and how it sits at the threshold. Discuss the route you use every day, cleaning access and any furniture beside the doors. The room image illustrates material and finish choices rather than a track detail.

Choose around daily use

If you open the glazed doors frequently, compare the extra movement needed to open the shutters as well. A wide opening may be better served by another covering if there is little room to park shutter panels.

We also offer motorised roller blinds. Suitability depends on the span, mounting space and controls; a blind is assessed for your doors rather than specified from a photograph. The bedroom illustration shows the principle of a roller blind behind shutters.

Plan your budget

Wide door openings need a specification for the track, panel sizes and stacking layout. The standard window estimator is only a starting point; ask for a measured quote for the complete door system.

Your questions answered

Are bifold shutters attached to bifold doors?

Do not assume so. A tracked shutter installation can use an independent frame in front of the glazing. We assess the door system and confirm the fitting arrangement.

Will the whole doorway be clear when shutters are open?

It depends on where the panels stack and the type of track. Folding panels still take up space; bi-pass panels overlap. The proposed clear opening should be checked before ordering.

Do tracked shutters need a floor track?

Requirements vary by system and panel specification. We confirm the top and bottom track arrangement and any threshold detail at survey.

Can I fold the panels with the louvres open?

Clearance depends on the blade size, hinges and track layout. Some configurations require louvres to be closed before folding. We explain operation for the system supplied.
