Full height shutters with mid rail or split tilt
Full height describes the doors, not one fixed light setting. With a single control, the louvres in a section move together. With split tilt, upper and lower groups adjust independently within the same tall door: keep the lower group angled for privacy while allowing more daylight through the top.
A midrail is a solid horizontal division within a door; it does not create a separate opening tier. Depending on the range and panel dimensions, it can divide the louvres and support the panel. A split without a midrail may give a less interrupted appearance. We confirm the available controls and any required rail before you order.
The timber illustration shows separate upper and lower louvre angles in full height doors. If you want the upper doors themselves to swing open while the lower doors stay shut, compare tier on tier instead. Café shutters leave the upper glass uncovered; full height shutters can screen that glass too.

Full height plantation shutters for bays and bedrooms
A bay needs a layout for every face. We measure the angles and check how neighbouring doors and louvres move at the corners. Frames and panel divisions follow the measured opening, with space allowed for catches, handles and any window seat or radiator.
In a bedroom, full coverage avoids leaving an exposed strip of glass above the shutters. Standard louvred shutters still admit some light around frames and moving parts. If early daylight is a problem, ask us to assess a compatible blackout blind behind them; the recess, controls and window access must suit the combination.
Opening a full height door needs clear space beside the window. Check bedside tables, lamps, sofas and curtain fabric before deciding the hinge direction. Shutters may need opening before the window can be operated or cleaned. We demonstrate the intended movement at survey rather than assume every panel can fold flat against the wall.

Wooden full height window shutters installation in London
Austin and Newport hardwood ranges suit many living rooms and bedrooms. Mayfair and Battersea offer faux wood options. Dulwich waterproof PVC is an option for bathrooms and other damp rooms, subject to the opening and intended exposure. The material, panel sizes, louvre options and finish are agreed together.
For a bathroom, we check ventilation, taps and how you reach the window. Direct shower spray needs a separate suitability assessment; a waterproof material does not settle every detail of the frame and fixings. For a dry room, compare samples against your existing joinery and in the daylight you normally use.
Your free London home survey covers width, height, recess depth, fixing surfaces, window hardware and panel clearance. Our carpenters fit the agreed shutters and check the doors and louvres operate correctly. The written quotation confirms the specification, fitting scope and expected lead time before you order.

How much do full height shutters cost in London?
The measured width and height, chosen material, number of doors and installation requirements determine the fitted price. For a bay, the widths of the individual faces matter, rather than the straight distance across the room. Full height and café designs cover different areas, but fitting costs do not simply halve with the shutter height. Use our pricing guide for an initial budget, then request a measured quotation for your own windows. We can itemise a front bay, bedrooms or a whole-home order.

What are full height shutters?
They are interior shutter doors covering the full height of a window in one tier. Horizontal louvres tilt for light and privacy; the doors open on hinges for access. A midrail may divide the louvres without dividing the door into separate tiers.
What is the difference between full height and tier on tier shutters?
Full height shutters have one tier of tall doors. Tier on tier has separate upper and lower doors that can open independently. Split louvre control on a full height door changes the blade angles above and below; it does not create an independently opening upper door.
Do full height shutters need a midrail?
Not every design does. Panel height, material and range specifications determine whether a rail is needed. We discuss the visual position and control options at survey and confirm the approved specification before manufacture.
Can the top and bottom louvres tilt separately?
Yes, where the selected range and layout support split tilt. We agree the split position around the window rails and the sightlines into your room. Available mechanisms and section counts depend on the chosen specification.
Are full height shutters blackout?
Standard shutters reduce light but are not blackout coverings. Small gaps around louvres, frames and moving parts let light through. We can assess a compatible blackout blind behind the shutters where recess depth and access allow it.
Can full height shutters be fitted to sash and bay windows?
Often, yes. We check every bay face and angle, or the sash rails and catches, then plan the frame and doors around window movement. Tight reveals, handles, radiators and nearby furniture can affect the layout.
