Shutters for French Doors

French door shutters need to work with the doors as well as cover the glass. We plan the panel layout around handles, hinges and the route to your garden or balcony.

Keep handles and locks accessible

A door-mounted shutter can need a shaped cut-out around a projecting handle. The handle must still move through its full travel, and the key and lock must remain usable. The required clearance varies with the hardware.

At the survey we check the door material, glazing beads, fixing positions and hinge side. We confirm whether a door-mounted arrangement is suitable before ordering; a generic panel size cannot establish this.

Plan the complete opening movement

Doors opening into a room need clear space beside them. Added shutter depth can affect how far a door swings, especially beside a wall, radiator or deep skirting. We check both leaves and their opening sequence.

An independent shutter frame in front of the doorway may be another option, but creates a second set of panels to open. We discuss daily use and cleaning access before recommending a layout.

Privacy without covering the whole view in fabric

Adjustable louvres let you change the light entering a garden-facing room. Closing them increases screening, while opening the panels restores a clearer view through the glass. Rails and frames remain part of the appearance.

For kitchens and dining spaces, choose a material for the conditions around the doors. We compare samples and check moisture exposure. These are interior window coverings, not exterior security shutters.

Plan your budget

Door height, panel weight, handle cut-outs, frame design and the chosen range all affect the quotation. Send a photo of the whole doorway and close-ups of the handles to help us prepare for a measured survey.

Your questions answered

Can shutters move with the French doors?

A suitable door-mounted design moves with each door leaf. Whether it can be fitted depends on the door, fixing positions, hardware and available clearance.

Can you fit shutters to uPVC French doors?

We assess the construction, fixing method and hardware at survey. Suitability and any implications for the door warranty need confirming before installation.

Will I still be able to reach the handles?

Yes, access must be part of the agreed design. A handle cut-out or alternative frame position may be needed.

Are French door shutters blackout?

Standard louvred panels are not total blackout. If the doors are in a bedroom, discuss a compatible additional blind and the space it requires.
