Which hardwood range suits your home?

Wooden plantation shutters are framed panels with adjustable horizontal louvres. “Plantation” describes the design; it does not tell you what the shutters are made from. Our Austin and Newport ranges use real hardwood.

Austin and Newport at a glance
RangeMaterial & finish
AustinPaulownia hardwood. Painted, stained and custom-colour options. Start here if you want visible wood grain.
NewportPoplar hardwood. A premium painted range with standard colours and custom colour matching. Compare a sample if a painted finish is your priority.
  • Both ranges include solid and shaped options, subject to the window specification.
  • Compare physical samples: a screen cannot reliably show the colour, grain or surface finish.
  • Agree the frame, louvre size and opening layout as well as the material.

Our hardwood ranges carry a 10-year warranty, subject to terms. Confirm the current finish choices and specification with your quotation. The room images on this page are illustrative design inspiration.

Painted or stained wooden shutters?

Choose the finish beside your window, rather than trying to match a small screen image. Look at the sample in daylight and under the lamps you use in the evening.

  • Painted: useful for coordinating with window frames, walls or joinery. Compare whites together; warm and cool shades can look quite different side by side.
  • Stained Austin: lets the timber grain remain visible. Expect natural variation between pieces rather than an identical printed pattern.
  • Custom colour: agree the colour reference and an approved sample before ordering. A matching colour name alone is not a guarantee of an identical appearance.
  • Whole-home orders: compare hardwood and wet-room material samples together if you want a coordinated finish.

An oak-coloured stain is a finish, not a promise that the shutters are made from oak. Ask for the timber species and finish to be listed separately on your quote.

Choose how your wooden shutters open

Material and style are separate choices. Solid hardwood means real timber; solid-panel shutters have no adjustable louvres. Choose the layout around your daily use of the window.

StyleUseful when…
Full heightYou want coverage across the whole window. Ask about split louvre control for different light levels above and below.
Tier on tierYou want the upper and lower doors to open separately. Allow room for both sets to swing.
CaféYou want lower-window privacy with clear glass above. The uncovered top remains visible after dark.
Solid panelsYou prefer a traditional panelled look. Open the doors for daylight; closed panels do not offer louvre-style light adjustment.
  • Sash windows: keep catches and window movement accessible.
  • Bay windows: plan each face, corner post and folding space together.
  • Arches and unusual shapes: confirm which sections open and how you will reach the controls.

When wood is the right choice—and when to compare alternatives

Start with the room’s conditions. You can use hardwood in the sitting room and a suitable waterproof material in the bathroom without choosing an entirely different shutter style.

Wood, faux wood and PVC: a room-first comparison
MaterialConsider it forCheck first
HardwoodLiving rooms, bedrooms and dry spaces where timber or a specific finish matters.Regular moisture exposure; exact finish and panel layout.
Faux woodA painted timber-style appearance. Compare Mayfair and Battersea samples.Moisture suitability and size limits for the chosen range; do not assume every faux wood product is waterproof.
Waterproof PVCBathrooms and splash-prone windows where a suitable Dulwich specification is confirmed.Exposure, hardware, available colours and the window’s shape.

For a kitchen window, discuss steam, condensation and splashes from the sink. A dry dining area and a window beside a shower need different advice.

Five checks before you order

  1. Stand where you need privacy and check the view from outside at the relevant angle.
  2. Show us the window fully open, including handles and catches.
  3. Allow for panels folding beside furniture, curtains or deep sills.
  4. Compare a finish sample against your existing paintwork in the room.
  5. Agree a drawing showing panel divisions, opening directions and any midrails.

Looking after wooden shutters

  • Dust both sides of the louvres gently with a soft dry cloth.
  • Follow the care instructions for your finish before using any cleaner or moisture.
  • Avoid soaking, steam cleaning and abrasive pads. Dry accidental splashes promptly.
  • Open doors using the panel stile, rather than pulling the tilt rod or individual louvres.
  • If a panel catches or a control feels stiff, contact us rather than forcing it.

For bedrooms, plan light exclusion separately from material: hardwood alone does not make a shutter a blackout product.

How much do wooden shutters cost?

The fitted price depends on the measured area, range, finish, shape and panel arrangement. Compare quotes for the same specification: a supply-only price is not directly comparable with a surveyed and fitted installation. Our pricing guide gives an initial budget; your home survey produces the window-by-window quotation.

  • Ask for the range, finish, panel layout and controls to be named.
  • Confirm whether VAT, survey, fitting and any necessary preparation are included.
  • Check the warranty terms and the current manufacturing and fitting estimate.
  • For a bay, include every face in the measurements; the front width alone is not enough.

Your questions answered

Are wooden shutters better than faux wood?

Neither is the best choice for every room. Hardwood offers real timber and a choice of painted or stained finishes, depending on the range. Faux wood may suit a different budget or room environment. Compare the actual samples, moisture suitability, panel limits and fitted price.

Can I have wooden shutters in a bathroom?

Real timber is not our default for a window exposed to frequent steam or splashes. We would assess a suitable waterproof PVC specification, including our Dulwich range. Tell us about condensation and proximity to the shower before choosing.

Are white shutters made from real wood?

They can be. Both our hardwood ranges offer painted finishes, so white shutters are not necessarily PVC. Ask for the range and material to be named on the quotation.

Do wooden shutters make a bedroom completely dark?

Standard louvred shutters have small gaps around moving parts. Solid panels also have perimeter gaps. For stronger light exclusion, consider a compatible blackout blind alongside shutters and plan the combination before ordering.

Will the shutters stop me opening my windows?

We check handles, sash movement, panel swing and ventilation at survey. Some windows require the shutter doors to be opened first. Nearby furniture and taps can affect the layout, so the clear opening matters as much as the closed appearance.

How long will my wooden shutters take?

Ask for the current manufacturing and fitting estimate with your quote. Timing depends on the range and specification. We confirm the expected schedule before you order rather than relying on a general delivery promise.

Do wooden shutters need repainting?

They arrive finished and do not need painting as part of installation. Dust regularly and follow the supplied care instructions. If a finish is damaged or you want to change colour later, ask us before sanding or repainting, as this may affect operation and warranty cover.
