Georgian window shutters with balanced proportions

Let the original glazing shine. Café shutters leave the upper panes clear; full-height and tier-on-tier layouts can follow the sash meeting rail.

We design Georgian window shutters around your reveals, pane divisions and existing joinery for a balanced finish.

A sash describes how the window opens; a bay describes its shape. If your sash windows sit within a bay, explore our shutters for bay windows guide too.

Victorian sash window shutters for London homes

Bring crisp lines to tall Victorian windows. Choose full-height for a seamless look, tier-on-tier for flexibility or café shutters for pavement-level privacy.

We check catches, sash lifts and opening space. You choose the finish: fresh white, a soft neutral or warm wood.

Wooden shutters for sash windows — and other materials

Hardwood

Our Austin paulownia and Newport poplar ranges bring a painted timber finish to living rooms and bedrooms. Austin also offers stain options. Compare samples beside your existing window frames at the survey.

Faux wood

A practical alternative with a painted shutter look. We compare the available specification, panel sizes and budget with the hardwood options so you can choose on more than appearance alone.

Waterproof PVC

Dulwich PVC shutters are an option for bathroom sash windows and humid rooms. We check the frame and configuration for the opening, with a finish that works alongside the other shutters in your home.

Solid shutters for sash windows

Traditional character, everyday privacy. Solid hardwood panels close across the glass for a cosy feel and open back to reveal your sash window.

Are sash window shutters energy efficient?

Yes — closed shutters add an insulating layer that can help keep warmth in. Wood and PVC insulate; in summer, louvres also help shade rooms from direct sunlight.

Historic Environment Scotland’s sash-window guidance (opens in a new tab) recommends closing shutters at night to reduce heat loss. Results depend on the window and shutter design.

Your sash shutter questions

Can you have shutters on sash windows?

Yes. Made-to-measure shutters work well with sash windows, including traditional timber and modern sash designs. The frame is planned around the recess, sash catches and opening movement. We check access to the window controls and space to open the shutter panels at your home survey.

What are the disadvantages of shutters?

Shutters usually cost more upfront than a simple off-the-shelf blind. The frame occupies some window space, hinged panels need opening clearance and louvres need occasional dusting. Louvred shutters are not complete blackout. Choosing the right panel layout and material helps you get the benefits without surprises.

Are shutters out of style in 2026?

We see shutters as a lasting design choice for sash windows. Their clean lines complement period joinery and contemporary rooms alike. Rather than choosing around a short-lived trend, match the finish and panel proportions to your home: white painted louvres feel fresh, while solid panels create a more traditional look.

What are the best blinds for sash windows?

The best option depends on your priorities. Plantation shutters offer adjustable privacy and a fitted frame; Roman blinds add fabric and softness; roller blinds give a simple covering that rolls up; Venetian blinds have tilting slats that can also lift. Our service specialises in made-to-measure shutters, and we can help you decide which shutter layout suits the room.

How do you dress a sash window?

Start with the proportions, the light you want and the view from outside. Café shutters leave the upper sash visible, full-height shutters cover the whole opening, and tier-on-tier lets you open the upper panels separately. Curtains can add softness around shutters where the pole and panels have enough clearance.

Can I open my sash windows with shutters fitted?

Yes, the design should allow everyday access to the sash catches and handles. You may need to open the shutter panels to reach them. We check sliding movement, any inward-tilting function and cleaning access before agreeing the frame and panel arrangement.

Do sash window shutters provide soundproofing?

Shutters add another covering at the window, but our interior shutters are not sold as a soundproofing system and do not have a stated acoustic rating. If traffic noise is your main concern, have the window seals and glazing assessed as well. Choose shutters for their privacy, light control and finish rather than a promised decibel reduction.

Do you restore Victorian window shutters?

This page covers new made-to-measure shutters. Restoring original Victorian shutters is a separate conservation and joinery task. If your window already has historic panels or shutter boxes, mention them when you enquire so the new design can be considered around the existing features.
