A practical price guide

How Much Do Plantation Shutters Cost in London?

Most shutters are priced from the area they cover, but the final quote also reflects material, panel design, delivery and fitting. A bay needs separate panels and frames across several faces. Start by comparing what each price actually includes.

How much do shutters cost per window?

For a standard painted Austin hardwood shutter, our current plantation shutters cost calculator gives the example budgets below. They are our indicative supplied-and-fitted ranges, rather than average UK prices or fixed quotations. Each includes standard frames and hardware, measuring, one delivery allowance, straightforward fitting and assumed 20% VAT.

Swipe across the table to read every column.

Our full-height shutter examples for one opening
WindowAssumed size and coverageIndicative total, including VAT
Small straight window1.2m × 1.2m = 1.44m²£750–£825
Larger straight window1.5m × 1.8m = 2.70m²£1,125–£1,250
Three-sided bayFaces 0.6m + 1.5m + 0.6m wide, each 1.8m high = 4.86m²£1,825–£2,000

The budget model applies an area-based material allowance, then fitting and delivery allowances and VAT. Its upper figure allows for fitting variation, with both ends rounded to the nearest £25. A bay involves multiple sections; corner posts, frame design, minimum charges and fitting complexity can change the surveyed quotation. Compare sizes and styles in our dedicated bay window shutter cost guide. Explore layouts in our bay window shutter guide.

What does “per m²” mean? Multiply the shutter width by the covered height in metres. For a bay, add the area of each face. A per-m² material figure alone is not the complete supplied-and-fitted window price, because measuring, delivery and installation also apply.

What is the cost of shutters for a three-bedroom house?

The number of bedrooms does not tell you how many windows need shutters or how large they are. A three-bedroom home might have one bay and several small openings, or fewer but much taller windows. Count and measure the openings you actually want covered.

Illustrative six-window calculation

Assume six separate straight windows, each 1.2m wide × 1.2m high, with 1.44m² of full-height Austin shutter coverage. Total coverage is 8.64m². Applying the same area-based material and per-opening fitting assumptions as our estimator, one delivery allowance and assumed 20% VAT gives about £4,125–£4,525, including the model's upper fitting allowance and rounding.

This is a worked arithmetic scenario, not a three-bedroom-house tariff or a multi-window quotation. Different room sizes, a bay, café or tier-on-tier panels, material, finishing and site conditions will change the total. Our online calculator estimates one window at a time; for a house, send us the window list for a written quote.

What affects a plantation shutter quote?

  • Size and number of openings

Area matters, but every frame, survey and fitting visit has work attached. A small single window is rarely just its area multiplied by a material rate.

  • Material and finish

Timber, faux wood and waterproof PVC have different specifications. Stains, custom colours and specialist finishes can alter the quote.

  • Style and hardware

Panel count, mid rails, tilt controls, hinges and frame profiles change the design and sometimes the price.

  • Bay angles and shaped windows

Each bay face is measured separately. Corner posts, uneven reveals, curves, arches and angled tops need more detailed design.

  • Fitting conditions

Access, wall condition, window handles, sills and making good can all affect installation. Ask what the fitter has allowed for.

How much do wooden shutters cost?

The per-window figures above use our standard painted Austin paulownia hardwood range. For that specification, the example total starts at £750–£825 for a 1.44m² straight window, supplied and fitted with VAT under the stated assumptions. It is a window example, not a general price for every wooden shutter.

Our shutter range also includes Newport poplar hardwood, Mayfair and Battersea faux wood, and Dulwich waterproof PVC. We have not applied the Austin example rate to those other ranges.

Wood offers painted or stained finishes and suits many living rooms and bedrooms. Faux wood gives a painted look with a different construction. Dulwich PVC is the option we show for wet rooms and bathrooms. Compare each range's finish, dimensions, available options and actual quote rather than assuming all PVC or timber costs the same. Our bathroom guide explains the waterproof option.

Do style and optional features change the price?

Full-height shutters cover the opening from top to bottom. Café style covers only the lower part, so there is less shutter area, but frame, measuring and fitting costs still apply. Half the height does not automatically mean half the quote. Tier-on-tier adds independently opening upper and lower panels and can need more hardware and careful alignment. Our estimator shows different assumptions for these styles on the same window.

Waterproof Dulwich PVC and an integrated blackout blind are options in our range, but we do not publish a reliable fixed surcharge for either. The material, frame and window specification need a tailored quote. Louvred shutters alone do not provide complete blackout; a suitable integrated blind may improve light blocking. For sash windows, the meeting rail and access to catches also influence the panel arrangement.

What does interior shutter installation cost?

An installation-only price covers fitting shutters you have bought separately. We do not publish a standard fitting-only tariff: the fitter would need to assess the number of frames, fixing surfaces, access and whether the supplied shutters and measurements are suitable. Request a specific quote rather than treating the difference between DIY and fitted prices as the labour charge.

An average price for shutters installed can also be misleading without the window size and specification. Our table gives complete prices for three defined openings. Those include the shutters as well as measuring, delivery, fitting and VAT; they are not installation-only charges.

DIY shutters or professionally measured and fitted?

Supply-only shutters can lower the initial bill if you are comfortable taking accurate measurements, checking recesses and assembling and fixing frames. You also take responsibility for fit and for resolving measurement errors with the supplier under its terms. Bay angles and uneven old openings make this more demanding.

With our supplied-and-fitted service, we measure the openings, agree the layout and our carpenters fit the shutters. The quote should make clear the scope of that responsibility, including what happens if a measured product does not fit as planned. Compare the total cost and the work you would take on, not just the per-m² headline.

What should I check when comparing shutter quotations?

  • Exact window dimensions, panel layout, material, finish and louvre size.
  • Whether the price is supply only, fitting only, or fully supplied and fitted.
  • VAT, delivery, measuring, frames, hinges, handles or tilt controls.
  • Bay corner posts, shaped sections, special cut-outs and blackout options.
  • Any access, parking, making-good or removal charges.
  • Who is responsible if the measurements or finished fit need correction.

Ask for these details in writing. Two window shutter prices are comparable only when the specification and inclusions match.

Are plantation shutters worth the money?

They may be worth the upfront cost if you value adjustable privacy, control over daylight and a made-to-measure finish you plan to use for years. A well-chosen style can also work with the proportions of sash windows and bays. Compare that daily value with a simpler blind or curtain for each room.

We would not base the decision on a promised reduction in energy bills or an assumed rise in property value. Your home's windows, how you use the shutters and the alternative covering all matter.

Common shutter cost questions

Is the price per m² the final price?

Usually not. Per-m² rates describe shutter area; order minimums, frames, delivery, style and fitting can change the total. Ask for a written quote for your openings.

Why does a bay window cost more?

A bay usually has more shutter area and several faces. Angles, corner posts, frame design and fitting time can add complexity beyond the area alone.

Can I get an exact price from a photograph?

A photo and rough sizes can start a budget conversation. Final dimensions, frame details and fitting conditions need checking before a firm quotation.

Does a café shutter cost half as much?

No. It covers less glass, but measuring, delivery, frame parts and fitting do not halve in the same way.

Are shutters expensive?

Shutters generally require a larger upfront budget than a simple off-the-shelf blind. The right comparison is the complete quoted specification: materials, measuring, fitting, VAT and the daily light and privacy control you want.

Are plantation blinds and plantation shutters the same thing?

People sometimes use “plantation blinds” for interior plantation shutters. Here we mean framed panels with adjustable louvres, not a roller or Venetian blind. Check the product specification when comparing prices.

Are these examples your fixed prices?

No. The window and house examples are indicative budgets based on stated assumptions. Your written quotation follows a survey of your windows.
