Shutters for wide windows: plan the panels first

Wide windows usually need several shutter panels. We plan their divisions around the glazing, then choose how they open. Available layouts depend on the selected range and panel dimensions.

  • Align panels and supporting posts with the window divisions.
  • Keep handles and glass accessible for opening and cleaning.

Full height window shutters and large slat options

Full height window shutters cover the whole opening with a single tier of doors. For tall glazing, consider:

  • Midrails: support taller panels where required and divide louvre sections.
  • Split tilt: adjust upper and lower louvres separately for daylight and privacy.
  • Large slats: compare 76mm with 63mm samples and check blade clearance.
  • Sightlines: check privacy from the street and neighbouring upper floors.

Louvre size is different from panel width. Standard shutters filter light but do not provide complete blackout.

Wide wooden shutters for tall and shaped windows

Wide wooden shutters can suit bays, tall glazing and sloping loft windows. Every shape needs its own measured layout. The room images here are illustrative design inspiration.

  • Hardwood: compare Austin and Newport samples.
  • PVC or faux wood: check the chosen range’s own size and layout limits.
  • Shaped sections: agree which panels open and how high controls are reached.
  • Survey and fitting: we measure, check fixing surfaces and clearances, then fit and demonstrate your shutters.

Your questions answered

Can you put shutters on big windows?

Yes, many big windows suit several made-to-measure panels. We check the opening, material, panel sizes and fixing surfaces at survey.

What is the maximum width for plantation shutters?

There is no universal maximum. Limits vary by range, material and opening method. Multiple panels and supporting posts can cover a wider opening; we confirm the chosen specification before ordering.

Do extra wide plantation shutters need a track?

Not always. Hinged panels with supporting posts may suit some openings. Others benefit from a track, depending on panel weight, stacking space and access.

Are wide slat shutters the same as wide shutter panels?

No. Slats are the horizontal louvres you tilt; panel width is the width of the framed door. Larger louvres can fit narrower panels where the range allows.

Can shutters for big windows open fully?

It depends on the layout and surrounding space. Stacked panels and fixed posts can cover some glass even when open. We explain the expected clear opening at survey.

Are full height shutters suitable for a tall window?

Yes, within the range’s size limits. Tall panels may need midrails. Choose tier on tier if you want upper and lower doors to open independently.

Can I have wide vinyl shutters instead of wood?

We assess suitable PVC options, including Dulwich for moisture-prone rooms. Their size limits differ from hardwood, so a wide opening may need a different panel layout.

Do you supply double wide or exterior shutters?

We supply made-to-measure interior shutters. “Double wide” is not a fixed size in our range; the panel layout follows your measured opening. This service does not cover exterior shutters.
